Dundela 0-3 Ballinamallard United 14/01/2012 Irish Cup Rd 5.
A fantastic display of goalkeeping by Johnny Sergeant was not enough to prevent Dundela exiting the Irish Cup in an exciting game played in front of a good sized crowd at Wilgar Park.
Ballinamallard had the majority of the early play and it was easy to see why they sit clear at top of Championship1. But for Sergeant in the home goal they could have taken a three goal lead into the break as time and time again he thwarted the away teams front men.
When the breakthrough did arrive it was shrouded in controversy as referee McIlwrath awarded a penalty for a handball against Graham Aston, Dundela players appealed in vain and McCartney netted to secure the advantage at half time.
HT 0-1
The second half was a much more even affair with Dundela attempting to get back in to the game but the closest effort was a Dee Wright free kick that was comfortably dealt with by McGrath in the United goal.
‘Mallard increased the lead just after the hour mark with a bizarre goal, Sergeant had made a superb save but as Gary Irwin attempted to clear the ball rebounded of the bar and hit the unlucky keeper finally landing in the back of the net.
The game was well and truly over before Carters netted a third in time added on.
